Let's type and save the first draft of a business letter in this lesson and then revise the same letter in lesson 4.   Typing the Inside Address Most business letters begin with an inside address. Let's begin with the first line of the inside address. Moving the Cursor If you have not already been introduced to the Arrow keys, they are usually located to the right of the typing keys on your keyboard. The Arrow keys let you move the cursor up, down, to the left, or to the right through your document without disturbing the text.  18,9,24,11  also  Because the Arrow keys are used to move the cursor through text on your screen, they are sometimes called the Cursor keys. ÿÍÿÍÿ Place the cursor on the space after the word "also"þþ  »»»æææ  ææ  The Backspace key is used to erase mistakes as you type. You could now print the letter and then save it to disk. The steps for printing are covered in lesson 1. So, let's get on with saving the letter.   Saving the Letter The first draft of the letter is finished. You are ready to clear your screen with Exit. However, because the letter will be revised later on, it should be saved before clearing the screen. The Exit key can take care of both items. ÿÍÿÍÿ Save the letter and clear the screen ´  ÿ After pressing the Exit key, you are asked if you want to save the document on the screen. In lesson 1 you answered no because the note was not worth saving. ÿÍÿÍÿ Save the letter y  ÿ The "Document to be Saved:" message is displayed on the status line at the bottom of the screen. This message is asking for a filename. Saving a document means storing it as a file on a diskette or hard disk. Each file on the disk needs a name.   When deciding upon a filename, remember that there is a limit to the length. A filename can be anything from one to eight characters. And if you need more, you can add a period followed by up to three more characters. A, EIGHTEEN, and EIGHTEEN.123 are all valid. ÿÍÿÍÿ Save the letter in a file named "park.tut" park.tut ®®´n  After the letter has been saved, WordPerfect displays the exit message, asking if you want to exit the WordPerfect program or clear the screen. ÿÍÿÍÿ Clear the screen n  The letter is now saved on disk in a file named "PARK.TUT." As a precaution, the Exit key will always ask if you want to save the document on your screen before leaving WordPerfect or clearing the screen.   Displaying the Filename Before finishing the lesson, you may want to check to see if the file was actually saved by using WordPerfect's file management feature, List Files (F5). ÍÍÿ Display the List of files that have been savedþþ  ²  ÿ To view a list of files on the disk drive and directory shown on the status line, just press Enter. ÍÍÿ Display a list of saved files 8 3,12 npark.tut  A list of files is displayed in alphabetical order. There may be more saved files than can be displayed on one screen. The list can be scrolled up and down by pressing the Up and Down keys.   Notice that the size of the file (in bytes) is shown next to the filename.
