However, the date at the top of the letter and initials below the signature need to be included.   Retrieving the Letter By now you should be familiar with the filename of the letter, so try using Retrieve (Shift-F10) instead of List Files to retrieve a copy of the second draft to the screen. ÿÍÿÍÿ Press the Retrieve key Ð  Notice that a "Document to be Retrieved:" message appears on the status line. Simply enter the name of the file you wish to retrieve. ÿÍÿÍÿ Retrieve the contents of the "Park.tut" fileþþ  park.tut  Inserting a Date In the memo lesson, you inserted a date code that inserts the current date whenever the memo is retrieved or printed. You can also insert the current date as text that will not change.   Use the Date key to enter the current date. ÍÍÿ Enter the date Ë  ÿ The first option on the menu will enter the date as text. ÍÍÿ Enter the date 1  Now you can add some spacing between the date and the inside address. ÿÍÿÍÿ Add spacing  Typing the Initials Now that the date is set, you can move to the bottom of the letter and add the initials. ÿÍÿÍÿ Type the initials Ä tlb  Spell-checking the Letter As a final step in the editing process, you can use WordPerfect's spelling checker to make sure there are no spelling errors or double words.   The spelling checker compares each word in a document to a dictionary list of over 120,000 words to make sure that every word is spelled correctly. Whenever WordPerfect can't match a word against the list, then the spelling checker stops and displays suggested spellings for the word.   Keep in mind that WordPerfect only checks the spelling, not the syntax or proper use of a word. For example, although the words to, too and two are spelled correctly, each can be misused, e.g., "She has to two many cars too insure."   On two disk drive machines, the tutor may not allow you to use the spell checker. Let's check to see if the tutor will allow the spell checker to work on your machine. ÿÍÿÍÿ Start the Speller Ò  ÿ If you see Check: 1 Word; 2 Page; 3 Document; etc., on the status line, then the tutor will allow the spell checker to work on your machine and you can continue with this lesson. Because the letter is less than a page in length, choosing Page or Document will accomplish the same thing. ÿÍÿÍÿ Select Document from the Speller menuþþ  3 100  The spell checker highlights any word "not found" on the 120,000 word list. One or more suggested spellings are shown below the dashed line.   To replace the misspelled word with the suggested spelling, just type the letter next to the correctly spelled word shown below the dashed line. ÿÍÿÍÿ Type the letter next to "marketing"þþ  Type the letter next to "marketing" abc1,abc  Very good! Notice that "marketting" has been replaced with the correctly spelled "marketing." Another misspelled word has been highlighted. ÿÍÿÍÿ Type the letter next to "attending"þþ  Type the letter next to "attending" abc1,abc  Again, the misspelled word is corrected and the speller moves on to the next word. In this case, it is a double word. The typist has mistakenly typed "a" twice. ÿÍÿÍÿ Delete the second word 3  The second occurrence of "a" is deleted and another misspelling is found. Type the letter next to "conference" abc1,abc  Notice, in the line above the highlighted word, that "suite" is misspelled. The speller did not stop because "suit" is a correct spelling of a different word.   "Smaller" is misspelled because the number one was substituted for the letter "l." You will need to edit this word manually. ÿÍÿÍÿ Replace the 1's in sma11er 4 ÀÀÀÆ Æll  After editing a word, press Exit to continue. ÿÍÿÍÿ Press Exit ´  Again, press the letter next to the correctly spelled word in the bottom screen. ÿÍÿÍÿ Type the letter next to "sincerely" Type the letter next to "sincerely" abc1,abc 9  Not very many proper names are found on WordPerfect's list. This is a good opportunity to demonstrate the Skip options. In most cases you will choose option 2 which ignores the word through the remainder of the document. ÿÍÿÍÿ Skip Megan 2  The initials are not found on the word list either. ÍÍÿ Skip the initials 2  Notice that a word count is given at the bottom of the document. Pressing any key returns the cursor to the document.
