In the 1760s when Bostonians found € that the regular procedures failed to effect a halt to the € detested revenue and stamp acts, the Sons of Liberty € called upon the organized crowd. € Ebenezer Mackintosh, a d, following the 1764 Pope's Day € celebration. As such, Mackintosh provided the best € leadership possible for the local inhabitants recognized € him as one of their own. Consequently they were more € willing to follow his directions than those of an € ackintosh served as a pri½- € vate from August 18 to October 6, 1777. Hutchins, owner € of a prominent Haverhill tavern, had gathered thirty-four € men, including some of Haverhill's most distinguished € inhabitants. For their service these men received cordwainer in the South End of € Boston, emerged in the 1760s as the leader of the mob in € that district of the city. A man of the people who spoke € their language and articulated their feelings, he proved  aristocrat. In addition, the Sons of Liberty had lost € contact with the inhabitants and Ebenezer Mackintosh, € reconnected the ties. On October 16, the British Lieutenant € Horton with a force of three hundred attacked Royaltonezer Mackintosh served as a pri½- € vate from August 18 to October 6, 1777. Hutchins, owner € of a prominent Haverhill tavern, had gathered thirty-four € men, including some of Haverhill's most distinguished € inhabitants. General Gates, commander of the € Ner Monument, was erected in Worcester, Massachusetts, € in commemoration of the Boston Tea Party and lists the € participants in that event. On the basis of the research € of Caleb A. Wall, the name of Peter McIntosh was € incorrectly placed on the monumee € Peter Oliver.µ26´ John Adams commented on these elections € in his Diary stating that "Thus the Triumph of Otis and € his Party are complete."µ27´ Indeed Otis and Adams had suc½- € cessfully crushed their opponents within the government. € This accomonument be erected to "Philip Mackintosh, of € Revolutionary fame." Unfortunately, the Coosuck Chapter € neglected to thoroughly research the subject of this € bequest prior to constructing the memorial and so pro½- € ceeded to inscribe it as instructed. nt. Although the question € of Ebenezer Mackintosh's participation in the Tea Party € still remains in doubt, it seems reasonably certain that € Peter McIntosh, a fifteen year old blacksmith's € apprentice, did not take part in the event.µ10´ € In Nplished, Samuel Adams now endeavored to perfect € the organized Sons of Liberty within Boston itself. € The Loyal Nine and other prominent leaders remained € as the core of Adams' organization of direct action. Yet € increasingly new leaders emerged Yet clearly the € given name of Philip is wrong. As the sources and George € P. Anderson in his article, "Ebenezer Mackintosh; Stamp € Act Rioter and Patriot" show, Mackintosh throughout his € entire term of residence in New Hampshire, was known as € Ebeorth Haverhill, New Hampshire there is a second € monument constructed of sandstone which stands four feet € high with a twenty-six inch base that tapers to twenty € three inches at the top. On this structure is a marble € tablet which bears the followingwithin the hierarchy. € Thomas Hutchinson in a letter to Thomas Pownall on March € 8, 1766 gives an account of the hierarchy as he perceived € it at that time; € I will begin with the lowest branch partly legislative partly executive. Peaslee of Cinncinnati, 0hio to € the Coosuck Chapter of the Daughters of the American  K183 183 € € Perhaps the most unhistorical results of the various € misconceptions regarding Mackintosh's identity may be seen € in two monuments in New England. The first, known as the € Slatanks of the Sons or who € shared sympathetic views with those held by the popular € leadership. These men replaced such staunch supporters of € the Governor as Thomas Hutchinson, Andrew Oliver, Edmund € Throwbridge, Jonathan Sewall and Superior Court Judg K184 184 € € Revolution in North Haverhill. Mr. Peaslee had formerly € resided in Plainstow, New Hampshire and was familiar with € Mackintosh's accomplishments. In his will he requested € that a mtosh residing in Haverhill or the surrounding area. € The inscription is obviously incorrect.µ12´ € The memory of Ebenezer Mackintosh has been passed € down to the present generation surrounded by myths,  of the popular leadership. € Ebenezer Mackintosh's usefulness as a mob captain there½- € fore began to decline as his services were no longer € needed in that capacity. Yet his importance within the € Sons of Liberty hierarchy remained intact. € EbenThe veil surrounding € Ebenezer Mackintosh has never been completely dispelled. € Much of his life still remains a mystery although recent € research continues to provide enlightening bits of € information. Yet even more relevant now than the myths  K185 185 € € misconceptions and controversy. Due in part to the lack € of historical accuracy that existed among early historians € and which has been further compounded throughout the € years, Macezer Mackintosh's role throughout this period had € been as a leader of men. He first emerged as such in 1764 € when he became the recognised leader of the South End. € Perceiving his ability to direct his fellow Bostonians, € the Sons of Liberty engaged K186 186 € € and legends regarding his life is the role Ebenezer € Mackintosh played in the crucial events of 1765-1774 which € led to the development of colonial opposition and sub½- € sequent breakintosh's obscurity can also be attributed to € Ebenezer Mackintosh himself. His role as a crowd leader € in colonial opposition to British policies from 1765 to € 1774, necessitated that he maintain considerable secrecy € regarding his activities. EbeneMackintosh in the colonial € cause. Working under the direction of the Loyal Nine, he € employed his men in both violent and peaceful instances of € crowd action. Ebenezer Mackintosh was not a pawn of the € Sons of Liberty. Rather he was his own man andk with Great Britain. €  zer Mackintosh operated as € a middle man between the Loyal Nine who led the Sons of € Liberty and the common people. As such he maintained € close contact with the leaders of the opposition and often € attended their meetings. His knowledge of what occunezer. In 1774, he had signed as a witness to a € contract and had presented a bill to the John Hazen estate € as Ebenezer Mackintosh. Both as a soldier and a scout € in the Revolutionary War he had enlisted under Ebenezer. € The Haverhill town records f L193 193 € € Following repeal of the Stamp Act, the Sons of € Liberty shifted their tactics of colonial resistance from € direct crowd action to and economic pressure as nonimpor½- € tation andrred € at these gatherings as well as his active role in carrying € out their programs made it imperative that Mackintosh keep € a low profile. Although he could read and write, € Mackintosh never kept a journal, wrote very few if any € letters and rarelyrom 1782-1784 also list € Mackintosh's given name as Ebenezer when he served as a € Sealer of Leather and on his marriage certificate and € finally the 1790 Census lists Mackintosh with the given € name of Ebenezer. There is no record of a Philip € Mackin nonconsumption agreements. The actual use of € the mob was no longer necessary in achieving results and € exercising authority within Boston. Often the threat of € calling out the mob proved sufficient in coercing British € officials to heed the wishes mentioned his activities within the € popular leadership. The effect was to surround Mackintosh € in a shroud of mystery. No wonder that much of what is € known about Mackintosh is immersed in an enigmatic fog of € misconceptions and misunderstanding.
