7742 Via Capri 26 May 92 La Jolla CA 92037 William Smith 1102 Lipan Drive Granbury TX 76048 William - I am enclosing two disks for your Kaypro 10; the System Disk which will reformat your hard disk, and a second disk with WordStar 3.0 and its associated programs Mailmerge and Spellstar. You will want to save as many programs/files as possible from your hard disk before reformatting. If your machine is reluctant to boot from the hard disk, bring it up on the System Disk that I have sent. After boot up, enter the command 'PUTSYS', wait for the command prompt to reappear, remove the System Disk and press the Reset button. If the machine boots up on the hard disk, proceed to format a number of floppies and download to floppy the programs and files that you want to preserve. If the machine will still not boot from the hard disk, reinstall the System Disk and press Reset again. As above, format a number of floppies. To make things easier in your downloading, I have included a program called 'DISK7.COM'. It contains a help screen that is available anytime you press the /? key. When you bring the program up, it will display the directory of the System Disk one file at a time. If you enter 'n' and then 'b' it will display the files on the first partition of the hard disk. Similarly, if you enter 'n' 'c' it will display files on the second partition. When you want to access another user area, enter 'b1', 'c5', or whatever is appropriate. As you go through the files on a given partition/user area, you may 'Tag' any that you want to download to floppy using the 't' key. Each time you enter 't', you will see a figure indicating how many kilobytes you have tagged for download. Before that figure exceeds 390K, enter 'g' followed by 'a' for the destination drive. Be sure that you have one of your formatted floppies in the drive first! After you have transferred this first disk of files, you will need to go through and 'untag' your selections with the 'u' command. Then repeat the process for the next batch. You can, of course, download files individually by using the 'c' command to copy them to your destination disk. The big advantage of using DISK7 is that once, you have brought up the program, you may remove the System Disk and only have to 'shuffle' the disks that you formatted to copy to. When you are ready to start on the hard disk, boot from the System Disk. At the prompt enter 'K10HDFMT'. This will bring up a screen of default values for the hard disk. These are correct for the K10. Use the Up Arrow key to bring the highlighted bar to the top line 'FORMAT No'. A will change the 'No' to 'Yes'. Pressing the Escape key will begin the formatting process which takes a while to complete. When you have finished formatting the hard disk, run the program 'FINDBAD.COM' on each partition of the hard disk ('b' and 'c'). When that is complete, enter 'SUBMIT RELOAD' and let it 'do its thing'. When all of the action ceases, remove the floppy and press reset. You should boot from the hard disk, and be ready to reload the files that you were able to save. Sorry to have been delinquent in getting these disks to you. Let me know if I can be of further help. $5 will cover these disks. Don Maslin
