T:This is the File and Disk Support menu, the one that you use to T:prepare your media for use, protect your files from accidental T:erasure, and duplicate files for backup. T: T:You can choose among the items on the list by typing a number T:between zero and ten when the computer asks for your choice. For T:some choices, the computer may ask you for more information. You T:will be asked for the generic name and disk identifier. These items T:are used to make an empty file which serves as the disk's name. T: T:A new disk has nothing recorded on it. In order to keep a record of T:where it is reading or writing information on the disk, the disk T:operating system needs to have the entire disk prerecorded in a T:special pattern. When you select function 1, the computer T:records this pattern, then writes a directory, a copy of the T:operating system and certain files which are needed for all system disks. You will T:be asked for the generic name and disk identifier. These items T:are used to make an empty file which serves as the disk's name. T: T:A new disk has nothing recorded on it. In order to keep a record of T:where it is reading or writing information on the disk, the disk T:operating system needs to have the entire disk prerecorded in a T:special pattern. When you select function 2, the computer T:records this pattern, then writes a copy of the operating T:system on the disk. T: T:NOTE: FORMATTING A DISK ERASES ALL INFORMATION ALREADY ON THE DISK. T: T: T: T: T: T: J:*MORE *MENU03 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU04 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 3 T:Function 3, "Select Default Disk and User", is used to change where your T:data is looked for, to change what data you are "logged into". T: T:Programs and data files normally may reside within any disk drive on the T:system. You therefore specify upon which drive the computer should look T:for a program or data file. It is necessary for the system to have a disk T:which it considers "home base", a place to go whenever it is not told to do T:otherwise. This disk is the default disk. T: T:Every disk's Volume Table of Contents ("directory") may be subdivided T:into sixteen separate and distinct sub-directories, or User Areas. This T:logical division of a directory allows private file space on public disks. T:This function allows you to switch into another User Area. T: T: T: T: T: J:*MORE *MENU04 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU05 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 4 T:Function 4, "Copy a file", allows you to copy one or more files, T:either to the same disk using a new file name, or to a different T:disk. T: T:Here are some timesaving ways to use Function 4 to copy multiple T:files. Look at the names of the files you need to copy, displayed T:in the bottom third of the menu screen. Each item has two parts T:separated by a period, such as "FILENAME.TYP". The part before T:the period is called the name; the part after the period is the T:type. If the type is the same for most of the files you wish to T:copy, AND there are no undesired files with the same type, you can T:copy them all at once by typing "*.TYP". That is type an asterisk T:then a period then the desired type then "Return", "Enter" or "CR". T: T:By typing "FILENAME.*" you can copy all files beginning with "FILENAME". T: T: T: J:*MORE *MENU05 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU06 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 5 T:Function 5, "Copy an entire disk", is the fastest way to replicate T:("back-up") important disks. It only works when both the disk T:being copied ("source") and the disk being created ("destination") T:have been formatted the same. If your computer system supports T:more than one disk density or format, make sure the two diskettes T:are similar. If the formats are not the same, use the "Copy a file" T:function instead. T: T:NOTE: THE NEW COPY WILL HAVE ALL PREVIOUS FILES ERASED. T: T: T: T: T: T: T: T: T: J:*MORE *MENU06 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU07 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 6 T:Function 6, "Copy a Systems Area only", transfers the operating T:system portion of a diskette to another diskette. This is needed T:if the receiving disk is going to be a "System", or "Program", disk. T:Whenever you receive a program disk from a software supplier, there T:is not yet a copy of your operating system, specifiying what's in T:your computer. Use this function to write it there. T: T:This does not affect any data files or programs. The file area T:of a disk is not diminished by the presence or absence of an T:operating system because the System Area is allocated when the T:disk is formatted. T: T: T: T: T: T: T: J:*MORE *MENU07 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU08 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 7 T:Function 7, "Disk Recovery and Repair", allows a programmer to T:modify data stored on your disk. This capability is both very T:useful and extremely hazardous. If you do not know what an FCB T:looks like, and if you don't know what a Group-Cluster is, save T:yourself some grief and stay away from this function. T: T:The DUMP22 program invoked by this function contains a list of its T:commands. If you "EDIT" a sector, you specify the address within T:the sector where you want to begin making changes by entering a four- T:digit address and then press "RETURN". The current contents of that T:address are displayed, and you may either enter a hexadecimal value T:to replace the current value, you may press "RETURN" to leave it alone, T:or you may enter a period (".") followed by "RETURN" to end substitution. T: T:To stop editing a sector, enter the command "WRITE" to update the disk T:or "STOP" to leave the disk unaffected. T: T: J:*MORE *MENU08 C:X=X-1 J(X):*MENU09 R:THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPLAIN FUNCTION 8 T:Function 8, "Write-Protect File(s)", writes special information T:about the files you specify, telling the operating system that T:those files are not to be erased or written. This can prevent T:inadvertant erasure of valuable data, but it also prevents you T:from making changes to the write-protected files. Should you need T:to remove or modify protected files, use the "Write-Enable" T:function on them first.
