T: T:Programs and data files normally may reside within any disk drive on the T:system. You therefore specify upon which drive the computer should look T:for a program or data file. It is necessary for the system to have a disk T:which it considers "home base", a place to go whenever it is not told to do T:otherwise. This disk is the default disk. T: T:Every disk's Volume Table of Contents ("directory") may be subdivided T:into sixteen separate and distinct sub-directories, or User Areas. This T:logical division of a directory allows private file space on public disks. T:This function allows you to switch into another User Area. Most programs can T:create their own files. This function is provided in case one of your T:programs requires it. T: T:SUPERVYZ will ask you for the name and type of the file you are creating, T:and the designation of the drive on which you want it placed. You may erase one file by typing the complete file name T:(example:"FILENAME.TYP"), followed by a CR. File names are displayed T:in the lower third of the menu screen. T: T:You can erase all files of the same name by typing "FILENAME.*", or all T:files of the same type by typing "*.TYP". T: T:BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL when using the asterisk. Reread the Volume T:Table of Contents to be sure you have not included a wanted file. T:NOTE: An experienced CP/M programmer can often restore an accidently T:erased file, BUT ONLY IF NOTHING IS WRITTEN TO THE DISK AFTER THE T:ERASURE. T: T:It is a good practice when you modify a file whose old version T:is used by other people, or provides information for other programs, T:to rename the new version until all users have been notified and all T:programs tested. T: T:Here are some timesaving ways to use Function 5 to copy multiple T:files. Look at the names of the files you need to copy, displayed T:in the bottom third of the menu screen. Each item has two parts T:separated by a period, such as "FILENAME.TYP". The part before T:the period is called the name; the part after the period is the T:type. If the type is the same for most of the files you wish to T:copy, AND there are no undesired files with the same type, you can T:copy them all at once by typing "*.TYP". That is type an asterisk T:then a period then the desired type then "Return", "Enter" or "CR". T: T:By typing "FILENAME.*" you can copy all files beginning with "FILENAME".
