HERE'S HOW: 1. Move cursor to place you want to insert text. 2. Type "I". 3. Type the text. 4. Press ESCAPE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - ^ (Boldface), _ (Underline), [ (Subscript), and ] (Superscript) are ON/OFF switches you can use during Insert. DON'T FORGET TO TURN THEM OFF. - By moving the cursor backwards, you can delete the text to the left. - ONLY the backwards cursor control works while using the Insert command. COMMAND: ERASE WHAT IT DOES: Eliminates spaces, letters, words, phrases, sentences, and lines. HERE'S HOW: 1. Move cursor to beginning of text. 2. Type "E". 3. Move cursor one space beyond the place you want to erase. 4. Press ESCAPE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - To erase a word at a time, type "E"; then type a space. - To erase a sentence at a time, type "E"; then type a period. - The erase mode is "character sensitive." Once you type "E", the computer will search for the very next character you type. TRY IT! COMMAND: POINTER WHAT IT DOES: Marks any point in the text. HERE'S HOW: 1. Move the cursor to the point you want to mark. 2. Type "P". 3. Type a number, 1 to 8 (Remember, you can reuse a number if you want). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: GOTO WHAT IT DOES: Sends the cursor to any preset part of a document (Top, Bottom, Page, or any preset Pointer). HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "G". 2. Type "T" for top, or "B" for bottom, "P" for page then the page number and (RET), or the number of any pointer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: LOCATE WHAT IT DOES: Finds any word you choose. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "L". 2. Type the word you want to find. 3. Press RETURN. 4. To find another instance of the word, type "L" and press RETURN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: REPLACE WHAT IT DOES: Locates and replaces a word each time it appears in your text. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "R". 2. Type the word you want to replace. 3. Press RETURN. 4. Type the word you'll substitute for it. 5. Press RETURN. 6. To leave the Prompt on, press RETURN and type "Y" or "N" each time the cursor stops. 7. If you take the Prompt off (by typing "P") type the number of instances of the word you want replaced then press RETURN. If you don't type a number, ONLY the first instance of the word will be replaced. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: DISPLAY WHAT IT DOES: Shows the next screen in the text. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "D". THAT'S IT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - To move forward more than one screen, type the number of screens you want, then type "D". - To move backwards, type "-D". COMMAND: QUIT WHAT IT DOES: Ends your word processing session. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type"Q". 2. Type "K" for Keep, or "A" for Abandon, or press ESCAPE to go back to your document. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: NEXT WHAT IT DOES: Shows you the next row of commands. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "N". THAT'S IT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: SPELL WHAT IT DOES: Allows you to resume SUPERSPELLing your document. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "S". 2. Continue SUPERSPELL where you left off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: FORMAT WHAT IT DOES: Sets the format of your document (e.g. margins, indents, spaces, etc.). Usually you'll do this when you create a document. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "F". 2. Type the first letter of the format setting you want to change. 3. Type the new setting. 4. Press RETURN. 5. Press ESCAPE when finished formatting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - When you call up the Format screen, the settings you see that are already listed are the "default values". If you don't change anything, those are the settings you get. COMMAND: APPEND WHAT IT DOES: Reproduces an entire document onto another document. HERE'S HOW: 1. Move cursor to the location you want the reproduced document to appear. 2. Type "A". 3. To get a list of documents on a disk, type "Y" and then the disk drive. 4. If you DON'T want to list documents, type "N". 5. Enter drive and document name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: VERIFY WHAT IT DOES: If the screen goes blank, Verify brings it back. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "V". THAT'S IT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: XCHNG WHAT IT DOES: Exchanges text, character by character. HERE'S HOW: 1. Move cursor to the character. 2. Type "X". 3. Type the character you want to exchange it with. 4. Press ESCAPE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: TAB WHAT IT DOES: Sets tabs just like a typewriter. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "T". 2. Using space bar, move cursor to desired tab setting. 3. Type "T". 4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for all tabs you want. 5. Press RETURN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - You can't use the backspace while setting tabs. COMMAND: COPY WHAT IT DOES: Duplicates a block of text from one part of a document to another. HERE'S HOW: 1. Set first pointer at top of block of text. 2. Set second pointer at bottom of block of text. 3. Move cursor to the point you want to copy the block of text. 4. Type "C". 5. Type the number of the first pointer. 6. Type the number of the second pointer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - Before COPYing, you must know how to use Pointer. COMMAND: ZAP WHAT IT DOES: Wipes out an entire block of text. HERE'S HOW: 1. Set first pointer at top of block of text. 2. Set second pointer at bottom of block of text. 3. Type "Z". 4. Type the number of the first pointer. 5. Set second pointer at bottom of block of text. 3. Type "W". 4. Type the number of the first pointer. 5. Type the number of the second pointer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - Before WRITEing, you must know how to use Pointer. - Use this command to develop a library of stock paragraphs for form letters and contracts. COMMAND: JUSTIFY WHAT IT DOES: Evens the margins in a block of text. HERE'S HOW: 1. Set first pointer at top of block of text. 2. Set second pointer at bottom of block of text. 3. Type "J". 4. Type the number of the first pointer. 5. Type the number of the second pointer. 6. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "C". 2. Type document name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - Here's how to name a document: 1) Type letter code of disk drive and a colon (usually drive A: or B:). 2) Type name of document (up to 8 characters). 3) Type a dot (period). 4) Type either DOC for document, or LTR for letter. EXAMPLES: B:SAMPLE.DOC A:DEALER.LTR COMMAND: EDIT WHAT IT DOES: Allows you to alter a document you have already CREATEd. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "E". 2. Type name of document. 3. If you want to change the document's name, type in the new one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: DELETE WHAT IT DOES: Removes a document from the disk. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "D". 2. Type the document's name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - BE CAREFUL!! Once you delete it, it's gone forever. COMMAND: VIEW WHAT IT DOES: Allows you to a see a scrolling view of a document without changing it. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "V". 2. Type the document's name. 3. If you want to stop the scroll, press the space bar. 4. To resume the scroll, press the space bar again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: LIST WHAT IT DOES: Provides you with a list of all the documents on a disk. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "L". 2. Type the letter code of the disk drive. (e.g. A:, B:, C:,...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - If you are in programmers' mode (see ALTER), the LIST command gives you a full listing including document size. - The drive you LIST becomes the selected drive for further disk operations. COMMAND: NAME WHAT IT DOES: Renames a document. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "N". 2. Type the document's name. 3. Type the new name you are giving it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: PRINT WHAT IT DOES: Prints out a document from a disk. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "P". 2. Type the document's name. 3. Type "F" for Final, "D" for Draft, or "R" for Reprint. 4. Continue answering all questions as they appear. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - Make sure the printer is on and connected to your terminal. COMMAND: SPELL WHAT IT DOES: Automatically proofreads a document. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "S". 2. Type the document's name. 3. Follow all subsequent directions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: TEACH WHAT IT DOES: Tutors you in SELECT. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "T". 2. Follow the directions in the TEACH program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - To use TEACH, you must use the TEACH disk provided in your SELECT package. Place the TEACH/INSTALL disk in drive A: and the SELECT with SUPERSPELL disk in drive B:. COMMAND: QUIT WHAT IT DOES: Allows you to leave SELECT and return to your operating system. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "Q". 2. Type "S" to return to resident system (usually CP/M), or "R" to run a program outside of SELECT and return to SELECT, or ESCAPE to return to SELECT immediately. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: HELP WHAT IT DOES: Explains how to use any SELECT command. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "H". 2. Type the first letter of the command you want. 3. To return to text, press ESCAPE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: RUN WHAT IT DOES: Allows you to run other programs without leaving SELECT. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "R". 2. Type the name of the program you want to run. 3. When you finish, press ESCAPE to resume using SELECT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMAND: ALTER WHAT IT DOES: Switches SELECT to programmers' mode. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "A". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - This is an ON/OFF switch. The asterisk in the upper right part of the screen tells you that you are in programmers' mode. To return to word processing mode, type "A" again. - In programmers' mode the default format settings are different, and the LIST command gives more detailed information. COMMAND: MERGE WHAT IT DOES: Uses SELECT to print documents with data extracted from a mailing list. HERE'S HOW: 1. Type "M". 2. Type name of document. 3. Type the name of the mailing list you want the data extracted from. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TIPS: - Data is extracted for data items that begin with an @-sign in the document. - Type "H@" for more information.
