"To make a set of working disks with which to run Personal PEARL, perform the following steps: 1. Exit from Personal PEARL to the operating system. 2. Make sure that you have 5 blank disks which have been formatted. 3. Label each of the formatted disks as a working disk (i.e. "WELCOME & FILE MAINTENANCE working disk", etc.). 4. Copy each of the five distribution disks to the corresponding working disk with your file copy command. (Refer to your computer operating manual for instructions in the use of the file copy command included with your operating system). After making a set of working disks, you can store the distribution disks in a safe location. They will function as a backup of Personal PEARL. If any of your working disks are damaged or misplaced, the distribution disks can be used to create new working disks. Before you can use your set of Personal PEARL working or distribution disks, you must install them. To do this, run WELCOME on your WELCOME disk and select the option to "Save terminal and system configuration" on the GETTING UNDERWAY menu. To use the working copy of your Personal PEARL system, proceed as follows: 1. Exit to the operating system. 2. Log on to the drive with the working copy of WELCOME, this will be drive A unless you have edited the INSTALL.DAT file with changes to the DISKS= parameter. 3. Enter WELCOME and press RETURN. 4. Select the Personalize option on the first WELCOME menu. 5. Select the option to "Save terminal selection and system configuration" on the next menu, GETTING UNDERWAY. N If you selected an IBM XT terminal from the terminals list, the WELCOME copy process will automatically copy your Personal PEARL programs to drive C of your IBM XT hard disk. You may ignore the instructions that follow to modify the INSTALL.DAT file as these instructions are for terminal selections other than the IBM XT. Please press RETURN to continue with the hard disk copy instructions When making a hard disk working copy of Personal PEARL, files may be copied onto 1 to 5 disk drives. These disk drives correspond to the following categories as specified by the "DISKS=abcdefgh" control in the INSTALL.DAT file: Category description DISKS= Standard 1. Personal PEARL system directory a B 2. FORM & REPORT definition files b B 3. Data & Index files c B 4. Help text e A 5. (Refer to APPENDIX C of your Personal PEARL REFERENCE MANUAL for additional details.) Press RETURN to proceed with copy processing or ESC to EXIT To facilitate the creation of a hard-disk version of Personal PEARL, you will be prompted to insert specific distribution disks and copying will proceed automatically. As disk copy processing proceeds, you will be requested to place the distribution disks in the same drive the WELCOME disk is currently in. Files will be copied from your distribution disks to the drives on your hard disk. As each file is copied, the message 'verified' or 'copy successful' should appear. If the message 'file not found' or 'verify error' appears, this indicates that you have a defective distribution disk. In this case, contact your dealer and ask for a replacement. + SAVE SELECTED TERMINAL AND SYSTEM CONFIGURATION SAVING SELECTED TERMINALS Pressing RETURN will save the terminal control codes for the terminal you selected when you initiated the WELCOME program. Personal PEARL requires these codes in order to do direct cursor positioning on your terminal. NON-STANDARD SYSTEM CONFIGURATION The standard configuration for disk drives used by Personal PEARL for programs and data files is to place program files on drive A, and your data files or the Sample Forms and Reports on drive B. You may change this if you wish. In order to do so, you must first change the INSTALL.DAT file and then rerun the WELCOME program. (The INSTALL.DAT file is located on the WELCOME disk. You may use any word processor or text editor to make changes to this file. Refer to Appendix C of your Personal PEARL REFERENCE MANUAL for details.) Press RETURN to continue or ESC to EXIT CONFIG,E, VERIFY PERSONAL PEARL PROGRAM FILES Use this option to verify the Personal PEARL program files provided with your system. You may verify files on either a working disk or a distribution disk. In some cases you may be getting PROGRAM LOGIC ERRORS when running the Personal PEARL programs which are caused by bad copies of the program files. A bad copy may be caused by worn or dirty disks, or a hardware failure in your disk drives. In order to verify the Personal PEARL program files on a disk, you will be requested to enter the drive id. All Personal PEARL program files on the disk in that drive will be verified. If a verify error occurs, you will probably want to replace the defective files by making copies from the distribution disks with the file copy command. Very simply, this means information stored in ASCII text files outside Personal PEARL may be loaded into the Personal PEARL data base. The ASCII text file may be in CSV (Comma Separated Value) format such as is produced by many popular spreadsheet programs, or may be in a file format such as is produced by Basic programs, word processors, or by Personal PEARL itself. File Load is especially good for batch processing when used with the PEARL RUN program provided with the Programmer's Tool Kit. Batch processing lets the user "automatically" load ASCII files into other PEARL files, and to do batch updates -- additions or deletions -- in files. Use File Load with Personal PEARL as an application development tool. Price: $ 100.00 suggested US retail NPROGRAMMER'S TOOL KIT The Personal PEARL Programmer's Tool Kit is designed to be used in conjunction with Personal PEARL in the development of menu driven applications which the end-user purchases as complete units, ready for operation. Those wishing to use Personal PEARL to develop and market stand-alone applications software may do so with Programmer's Tool Kit under a licensing aggreement with PEARLSOFT. How the Tool Kit Works To design a new stand-alone application, the forms and reports (templates) are created using Personal PEARL. The Programmer's Tool Kit may then be used to create control files which allow the forms and reports to operate independent of Personal PEARL. Using programs from the Programmer's Tool Kit, the user then creates operating portions of the new application, like terminal control and installation, Menu controls and HELP information. The Tool Kit consists of two main parts: the PEARL RUN programs and the utility development tools. NUser Level: Programmers and advanced users wishing to use Personal PEARL to develop and market stand-alone applications. Pearlsoft's transformable applications will have three levels of transformation, as shown in the following example of Integrated Accounting $. I. Flexset - Contained in Integrated Accounting $. The level of transformation that FLEXSET offers allows flexible report set-up, report modification and the addition of new reports. II.
