Smartkey II Version 1.0M (8 bit) Stop Press Info: Distribution Disk: If you are reading this from your distribution disk, don't forget to copy all the files on this disk to a working disk before you do anything else. Dvorak Keyboard: The sample definition file DVORAK.DEF alters the keyboard layout from the familiar, but awkward, QWERTY to the more efficient arrangement pioneered by Dr Dvorak. To use the new layout, transpose (or add additional legends to) your keytops and then type SMARTKEY DVORAK. Note that you may have to modify the definitions slightly to correct for the non- standard punctuation key layout on different keyboards. For more information on Dvorak typing, contact 'Quickstrokes' PO Box 643, West Sacramento CA 95691 or the Dvorak International Federation, PO Box 128, Brandon VT 05733. Definition Expansion Speed Smartkey version 1.0B and later allows the speed of definition expansion to be slowed down to stop some applications programs overloading or dropping characters when you hit a key with a long definition. The speed may be set permanently by setting a delay value using Skpatch or temporarily using the Fixkey "6" command. Slow down will only work with those programs which periodically check the keyboard for a character while they are doing other tasks as these are the only ones which need it. The speed will not vary with the operating system or other programs which just get a character when they need it since these do not overload. The actual speed reduction will vary from system to system and applications program to applications program. Skpatch and Fixkey allow you to select delay values between 0 and 9 and you will probably need to experiment to get the ideal value if you have an applications program which has problems with accepting long definitions. New Release Changes for Fixkey and Skpatch V1.0M: ENDING PAUSES IN DEFINITIONS: Many users have asked to use [return] to end a definition pause instead of [setup]. When you alter the [Setup] key using the Skpatch "S" command, the program now also asks whether you want to change Smartkey to use [Return] instead. If you say yes, [Return] will end pauses rather than [Setup]. SAVING DEFINITIONS AS TEXT FILES: The Fixkey "1" command (pack and save definitions) now asks whether you want to save the current definitions as a regular Definition (.DEF) file for loading with Smartkey or as a Definition Text (.DTX) file for editing with a text editor and then recompiling using the Fixkey "8" command. USING A PRINTER: Fixkey and Skpatch now allow use of the [Control-P] character to slave the printer to the console output. Uunder CP/M you can type ^P in response to main menu selections in either program. Typing ^P a second time turns the printer off.
