MARCH 04/1985 Was logged onto the NITE OWL CONNECTION very early this morning and noticed that in all of the doc. and info files no one had ever said anything about an apparently over looked feature of MEX (M/odem EX/ectuive). So I decided to repay all the good guys a little bit, with this file called MEXTXT.TIP /// GOES AS FOLLOWS: Anyway I looked at the current msg's, and still didn't see anyone mention anything about the current ability of MEX to do small primitive word process- ing chores. So just in case no one knows. I'll drop a mex tip here!! seq. enter command ;comments--------------PURPOSE----------------- ; --To create a new usable file W/no editor.-- #1a. E FILNAM.TYP ;mex opens a file then goes to E)cho mode ;FILNAM.TYP can be either a new file or an ;old file.ie: NEWFILE.doc, asm, txt,no typ at alL ;ie:INI.MEX,if old. file must have been created ;with a blank return line at end of last entry. #1b.<-------------------> ;in E)cho mode there will show a vertical ;line of colons on the extreme left of screen ;indicating that MEX is saving input. #1c.<-----------------> ;go ahead and enter any text you desire, don't ;think you should go beyond the line limits of ;your screen. #2a.<------example------> ;see below!!!!!!!!!entries after the colon, ;indicating you are in E)cho mode. ;SOME of these commands will NOT work if the ;MXPAT???.ASM overlay has been used to change ;the generic MEX.COM as dist. by R.Fowler ====================================================================== :ID "<>" :STAT SILENT ON :STAT SEARCH 3 ;AS AN AFTER THOUGHT IF YOU WOULD LIKE :ALT A0: ;TO USE THE SAME SETUP AS ENTERED HERE. :STAT FILTER ON ;USE THIS METHOD TO CREATE A NEW INI. :STAT EXTEND ON ;MEX FILE, or use your favorite Wordst- :LOAD PHONE.PHN ;ar or other processor to column block :LOAD KEYS.KEY ;the stuff on the left.not including :STAT SPLIT OFF ;colon nor this stuff. and in the case :STAT WTECHO ON ;of Wordstar, then do a ^KW to a file :STAT EXCLUDE OFF ;called INI.MEX or whatever. The setup here is :SET ;real good.try it you'll like it. :<>;this is a blank line with a return. so that ;you may at a later time append to this file ;in order to change or add to the old INI.MEX ;actually there may be a better way to do this ;but if so I haven't found it yet. ====================================================================== seq. command ;comments #2b. ^J E ;escape character plus returns to Mex comm- ;and line. #3b. WRT ;closes E)cho capture file INI.MEX and saves. WELL!!!! thats a deep subject, but with a lot of excess verbosity, I do think the above should be clear. sooooo, just play around with it and all phases of the technique should become even more plain. However the last entry in the file maybe should be explained. The over- lay for the Otrona Attache supports the set command the old MDM7??.COM way. ie: SET brings up set 300,600,1200,2400,etc. while the overlays for a lot of other computers use the form of: SET BAUD 300 or 1200 or etc. I just happen to be using my Attache to write this. One more thing, I a few weeks ago uploaded to various RCP/M boards here in Houston,TX., an overlay file for my RIXON R212A modem. called MXM-RX10.AQM like all new attempts, it's flawed. at least in the "CONNECTED" action. it does dial, get connected, but then instead of printing "CONNECTED" then going to T)erminal mode. it just sets there on the dialing line. if I pick up the phone handset I'll hear the tone and know I"m online. Last week I got a MXO-PR10.AQM file from Howard Gerber. did the MLOAD bit, Tried out the new version and it's even worse. now I get a message of: (while still on the dialing line) MODEM ERROR, but listen to tone and I'm connected. I've only one more thing to add: HELP ME!!!! Somebody. Anybody.!!!! Gene Weber 14231 Greenville st. Houston,TX. 77015 Ph. 713/455/5133 (if local call, if not write) PS: Another thought, if you should use the INI.MEX as above. you most likely need to: on the mex command line type: DEL (this del)etes the file NEWLOG.85 as entered by INI.MEX) then enter as above example: E FILNAM.TYP ( in the case of A)ppending to an old filename ) do: EA FILNAM.TYP (can be anything. except, a command or obj file, etc.) PPS: Boy,I hate this, Appending to a post script. But as my friend, Howard Gerber, pointed out. ( rightly, I may add. ) the first issue of MEXTXT.TIP was riddled with bad spelling. my only excuse is: it was very early, and I didn't know it, but I was very tired at the time. And right now, it's late, and I have no plans to check this post , post script. (I might add, if this were a program I'd put a version number on it.) Hope you received this issue. Grand way of say- ing, mea culpa ( hope that's good enough.) PPPS: really bad, but if you take my advice and use wordstar or other editor to retrieve the read file above, for your own use, you should: get rid of any extra spaces on each line of each entry in the file. (other wise you'll get read errors.) Believe me, I did try it. (tip: wordstar: ^G til line flips over then: ^V & return. brings back the previous line to sight.) then do it again Sorry about all this, but just responding to questions that people have called about. I suggest that there is a whole lot of things left for people to discover about MEX. if this MEX1 is so programable, Think about MEX2 Gene Weber 03/11/85
