ATARI: THE 80 CLASSIC GAMES -- CUMULATIVE PATCH: This patch program will upgrade Atari: The 80 Classic Games to fix potential crash bugs, upgrade theme wallpaper, and improve support for the optional Stelladaptor controller interface. This patch includes fixes not in previous patches. You should apply this patch even if you do not have the Stelladaptor as it contains several important bug fixes. Before running this patch you should first install the games component from the Atari: The 80 Classic Games CD-ROM to your hard drive. Only components installed on your hard drive will be patched. If you install additional components later, you should re-run this patch program. The following fixes and enhancements are applied by this patch: * A fix has been included for a potential crash bug in Major Havoc. * A fix has also been included for a potential DirectX issue wherein a black screen freeze can occur when launching games. * The arcade versions of Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Gravitar and Space Duel will now, by default, activate Hyperspace/Shields/Tractor if the joystick is pulled down. This mimics the home Atari 2600 version of these games. This feature may be disabled under the Joystick Setup page of each game's Options. * Tempest and Major Havoc can be played with an Atari 2600 driving controller connected to the Stelladaptor. The Stelladaptor, available from AtariAge.com, allows you to connect authentic Atari 2600 joystick, paddle and driving controllers to your USB port. Note: to activate this feature, you must select each game's Joystick Setup page under its Options and manually set the controller style to Atari 2600 Driving Controller. The game will not respond to the Atari 2600 Driving Controller until this mode change has been applied.) * Pong, Super Breakout, Warlords and the Atari 2600 paddle games now correctly map the second paddle controller. Previously, the second paddle controller was reversed. * Additional modes have been added under paddle-enabled games' Joystick Setup. These modes make it possible to reverse either axis (or paddle) direction when in absolute mode. The following theme components are also upgraded by this patch: * Asteroids wallpaper (upgraded from 8-bit to 24-bit) * Centipede wallpaper (upgraded from 8-bit to 24-bit) * Missile Command wallpaper (upgraded from 8-bit to 24-bit) * Pong wallpaper (new 24-bit art) * Super Breakout wallpaper (upgraded from 8-bit to 24-bit) * Tempest wallpaper (upgraded from 8-bit to 24-bit) Notes: 1. as this patch alters the controller options available in many games, the Joystick Setup options for these games will need to be restored to their defaults. If the patch is removed, you will again need to restore your controller settings to their defaults. 2. if your controllers do not respond, check the Joystick Setup page under the game's options. 3. the Driving Controller mode of Major Havoc and Tempest supports a second button (for Shields and Superzapper, respectively), though the Atari 2600 Driving Controller has only one button. The second button is expected on the "joystick right" pin of the Atari 2600 port. For those experienced in hardware modification, one can add a second button on that pin. Do so at your own risk, however. Off-the-shelf Driving Controllers can be used without modification, but only Fire (by default) will be available via the controller's button.
